Small Groups at Greenwood
Pastor Tim Hawman recently began a new sermon series entitled "Learn and Live" based on the Old Testament book of Proverbs.  As we explore the truths of Proverbs we expect to be challenged by its timeless truths and principles for godly living.  At Greenwood, we understand that there is far more to learn from the Bible than can be taught in a Sunday sermon.  That is why we have developed a sermon-based small group Bible study series to further grow in our understanding of God's Word.

Sermon-based small groups are designed to help us study in more detail what we often only have time to introduce or touch on briefly in a Sunday sermon.  They also provide a great way to meet and get to know other people from Greenwood.

When do Small Groups meet and who leads them?

Small Groups meet on various weekday evenings during the fall, winter and spring months.  Each group is lead by a trained Small Group leader.

Frequently asked questions about Small Groups

1. What is a Small Group?
A Small Group is made up of 8-12 people who meet weekly to study, to share, and to support one another in their Christian lives. Each group is led by a trained leader and a typical meeting lasts for an hour and a half, followed by light refreshments.

2. Why are Small Groups Important?
At Greenwood, we consider Small Groups to be a central part of our ministry. Small Groups are designed to be the place where change takes place. Change in sin habits, attitudes, character—all the things Christ would have us grow out of. We want to GROW and mature and Small Groups are the place where we can encourage, support, and challenge one another to deepen our relationship with Christ.

3. What Will We Study?
The studies are based on Pastor Tim’s weekly messages. Most of our Small Groups are built upon a "Lecture‑Lab” model. If you imagine the Sunday morning sermon as a lecture on Christian living, then the Small Group meeting is a lab where you get to roll up your sleeves and discuss how the sermon works out in real life. Each week there will be a series of Bible passages and questions to study and complete before your meeting. You’ll notice that homework is included on the back of a sermon note sheet which you will find in your bulletin beginning next week.

4. How Long Does A Group Last?

Each Small Group session lasts 10 or 11 weeks, with groups running during the fall, winter and spring months.  At the end of each session, you have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group, or even taking a break. Our desire is that groups will stay together throughout the entire year.

5. What Is The Required Commitment?

Joining a Small Group requires a 10 to 11 week commitment to attend the weekly meetings and to do the homework ahead of time. Obviously, allowances are made for sickness, vacation, work conflicts, and other special events.  We have found that this commitment is the key to strong relationships and healthy groups.

6. What About Childcare?

We leave it up to each family to work out their own childcare. Sometimes it works best for families to share a baby sitter or to swap childcare with another family whose Small Group meets on a different evening.
